PaperChain to back next year's Recycle Week

PaperChain will support Recycle Week 2008, the annual event organised by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) to promote recycling, after withdrawing from this year's event.

The paper and board industry campaign group did not support the 2007 event because it felt it was promoting increased collection levels while failing to focus attention on quality and sustainability.

PaperChain also had serious concerns over the increase in single-stream (co-mingled) collections because they did not support the requirements of reprocessors.

However, chairman Martin Green said it had reconsidered its position because "we essentially feel that Wrap is now more focused on quality and the continued promotion of recovery".

Recycle Week 2008 will run from 2-8 June 2008.

The event is organised by the Wrap, with support from British Glass, Corus, Novelis, and Recoup, and tries to communicate positive messages about recycling and highlight achievements, as well as encourage the public to recycle more.

There were 168 local events in 2007.

PaperChain members used around 3.5 million tonnes of recovered paper and board in 2006, representing 82% of recovered paper and board used in the UK, and 43% of recovered paper and board collected from the UK waste stream.
