BPI continues to trade behind 2007

British Polythene Industries, the UK-based manufacturer of polythene film and bags, has reported that it continued to trade inline with expectations in the first six months of the year, but "somewhat" behind the same period in 2007.

The company reported a downturn in demand from customers in the UK construction sector and said parts of its industrial business were "quite weak".

However, it said that this had been balanced by demand from agricultural and consumer related sectors.

In a trading update it added: "We have very recently been notified of further substantial increases in raw material costs for July and the late notice from our suppliers will result in margin compression while we pass these costs on to our customers.

"We remain confident that, as with the cost increases of the last few years, we will recover margins as prices stabilise."

BPI will announce its interim results for the six months to 30 June on 29 August 2008.
