United Closures & Plastics passes independent tests
United Closures & Plastics' PP28mm Medi-Loc child resistant closure has achieved a 100% pass rate with adults aged 60-80 in independent tests.
The Norwich firm decided to test its closure in response to CEN (European Committee for Standardisation) proposals to launch a general test method to evaluate ease of opening of packaging with elderly people.
For more than 30 years in the UK the requirements for evaluating child resistance have tested both children and adults and both sections of the test have to meet minimum standards to achieve a fully accredited pack.
The Norwich firm said it is generally accepted that the test method for children is still reliable, but for adults the age range has steadily increased to reflect lifestyle changes, yet the minimum pass rate required in the protocol test has remained unchanged.
BS EN 8317 was introduced in 2004 with the age range of 50-70 considered under identical pass criteria.
UCP managing director Louis Meyerowitz said the firm decided to use an independent company to test its PP28mm Medi-Loc using the protocol for BS EN 8317:2004 adult testing, but with adults in the 60-80 age range.
"We were delighted to learn that it achieved a 100% pass rate," he said.
"UCP has always aimed to develop child resistant systems which are also adult friendly."
