Daily Mail blasts recycling video

Two Lancashire councils have been criticised for producing a video to inform residents how to recycle.

Fylde and Wyre Councils jointly produced the 10-minute video to demonstrate which containers should be used for which products. It also gives information on what cannot be recycled. Both councils currently have recycling rates of around 42%.

The Daily Mail, however, suggested that the £2,000 video was a waste of money. "It's hard to believe there could be a single person who doesn't understand how to recycle their rubbish," it said.

The criticism comes less than a month after the newspaper ran a story saying that recycling was as hard to do as Sudoku.

Councillor Vivien Taylor, Wyre Borough Council living places portfolio holder, said: "Separating our recyclables and knowing which container to place them in can be a daunting task for everyone, but we're hoping this film will make life easier for all residents."

Councillor Tim Ashton, Fylde cabinet member for operational services, added: "The new DVD is a simple, easy to follow guide that explains everything in just the right amount of detail. It is also great for people who already recycle as it shows some ways of being more efficient at it."

The Fylde and Wyre video can be viewed on Wyre Borough's page on YouTube.

Would you be willing to watch a 10-minute film about recycling in your local area? What would be a better way to help households recycle correctly? Or are there more important issues for local authorities to address to improve recycling?
