Tetra Pak launches carton recycling scheme for schools

Tetra Pak and the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK) have launched the Business and Schools Carton Recycling Scheme.

The service enables schools and businesses to use the internet to contact their local carton recycling contractors, including Recresco, Shanks Waste Management, J&B Recycling and Bywaters.

Businesses and schools can use the web portal to get a quote and set up a collection.

Fay Dashper, recycling operations manager at Tetra Pak, said: "As an industry, we take our commitment to recycling very seriously and want to help people to reduce the waste they send to landfill.

"We look forward to seeing more schools and businesses getting involved, and urge every company and school to visit the website, see if their area is covered and start recycling cartons."

Once sufficient quantities of cartons are collected by contractors and baled in the regional hubs, the cartons are sent to the Orebro mill in Sweden. They can then be recycled into a number of different products, ranging from plasterboard liner to high-strength paper bags and envelopes.

Each year 200 million milk and juice cartons are used in England's primary schools, while secondary school pupils and staff get through more than 35 million.
