Jobs under threat at Alcan's Salterbeck plant

Alcan Packaging has placed 40 jobs under threat at its confectionery packaging site in Salterbeck, Cumbria according to local newspaper reports.

The News & Star viewed a copy of a letter sent to staff by managing director Mark Suitor that said it was with "great regret" that it was having to restructure the business.

The company declined to comment further.

Jobs in the plant's gravure printing department were previously placed under threat in January 2007 and strike action was threatened.

However, discussions between Alcan and Unite (then Amicus) resulted in manning levels and production levels remaining the same in the site.
