JCB develops bag-in-box lubricants

JCB Services has turned to the bag-in-box format to package its own brand oils.

The new bag-in-box, which is available in a five litre and 20 litre format, replaces the previous 25 litre plastic drum used for JCB's lubricant range.

The pack consists of a rigid outer cardboard box made from 96% recycled cardboard that incorporates a weather-proof film on the outer surface so it can be stored outside.

Despite the film, the cardboard is 98% recyclable and can be disposed of through existing cardboard collection and recycling streams.

The inner plastic bag uses 84% less plastic than the plastic drum format and can be squashed down to the size of a grapefruit for disposal as contaminated waste.

The valve is pulled through a hole created by pushing through perforations on the top of the box and there is a built-in handle for pouring.

JCB director and general manager of World Parts Centre Guy Robinson said the company has reduced the weight of each pack from 720g to 115g.

According to the company, the new pack will save approximately 200 lorry movements a year as 960 litres, as opposed to 800 litres, can now be placed on a pallet.

Robinson said: "Given the stringent regulations governing the disposal of hazardous waste, this achieves a major reduction in costs for JCB's end user customers."

JCB currently sells eight million litres of lubricant each year.

The company was unable to disclose the manufacturer of the pack.
