Diageo wins damages in Chinese whisky copycat case

Drinks brand owner Diageo is reported to have won more than £100,000 in damages in a Chinese court after a company in the country copied its packaging.

Reports say that the Shanghai No. 2 International People’s Court found that a company called Blueblood (Shanghai) Wine Co had copied the packaging of Diageo’s Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky brand.

According to the China Daily, the company had copied the packaging for its own Polonius brand and have sold about 37,000 of the bottles.

Diageo is reported to have first complained about the whisky bottles being copied in 2006. Blueblood was ordered to pay Rmb1.25m, or around £120,000, damages to the UK drinks group, a sum understood to be unusually high for this type of case.

Diageo could not be contacted for comment this morning.
