Impress scoops top prize at MPMA awards

Impress Metal Packaging's self-dispensing 10-litre beer keg (TenCan) for Heineken has won the Supreme Gold Award at the 2008 Best in Metal awards organised by the Metal Packaging Manufacturers' Association.

The TenCan, which impressed the judges for pushing the boundaries in what was possible with a metal pack as well as its aesthetic appeal, also took gold in the technical innovation, consumer appeal and alcoholic beverage categories.

Ball Packaging's resealable tin can, produced for Coca-Cola and Bound2B, was another popular pack among the judges winning the functionality and soft beverages categories. The tamper-proof, plastic, flat opening mechanism is integrated into the can end and rotates to open and close.

Given the furore surrounding Easter egg packaging it was not surprising that Cadbury's metal plate tin, from Crown Speciality Packaging, also caught the judges' eye for its premium look and reusability, taking the new market applications award.

The sustainability award went to another Crown pack – a tin for Quality Street chocolates.

The judges for the awards were Samantha Allison, design services manager for Corus Packaging Plus, Crown Paints packaging and print manager Steve McHugh, technical consultant Bev Page, Packaging Federation chief executive Dick Searle and Packaging News reporter Simeon Goldstein.
