Mondi, DS Smith lead way in ethical companies listing
Mondi has been named fourth in Sunday newspaper The Observer's Good Companies Guide that ranks all the companies in the FTSE 350 share index.
Mondi was the highest ranked packaging company in the list, which was published in the Observer's Business and Media Section at the weekend (16 November).
The company was joined within the top 50 by Rio Tinto (26) and DS Smith (29), while Rexam (106) was ranked just outside the top 100.
DS Smith group communications manager Peter Aubusson said the company had increased the amount of information it provides on its environmental performance and has "programmes in place to improve that".
Alcan Packaging's owner, the London-based mining giant Rio Tinto Alcan, also performed well, coming in 26th place.
The list, is based on three specific responsible investment criteria. These include how the company reports its social and environmental risks and manage its impact, the quality of its corporate governance and how the company address issues specific to their industries.
According to the Observer article the aim of the list is to aid investors "who wish to hold shares in or deal with companies that try to make a positive contribution to society and follow good corporate governance practice".
Scottish and Southern Energy topped the list, but packaging clients also put in a good showing. Marks & Spencer Group was ranked 18, Sainsbury's was placed 42 and GlaxoSmithKline was at 52.

Well done Mondi and DS Smith - just what the packaging industry needs, and two fingers to those who say we're in a dirty industry!
