ProCarton to launch carbon footprint leaflet

ProCarton, the association of European cartonboard and carton manufacturers, has announced that it will launch a new carbon footprint leaflet at Interpack this month (24-30 April).

The leaflet provides industry average figures on the amount of carbon per tonne stored in the forests in roots and trunks, cartonboard products and fossil emissions from the production and conversion of cartonboard.

ProCarton was limited to only publishing industry average figures because of its status as a trade association.

It has produced the leaflet for members to use in discussions with customers about the carton industry's carbon footprint.

ProCarton has used the approach developed by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) with paper and board packaging sectors to calculate the carton industry's carbon footprint.

ProCarton environmental officer Jennifer Buhaenko said a member company can use the same methodology and apply it to their own products.

The association will be holding a free workshop for members at its annual general meeting on 13 May in Leeds.

The workshop will provide a forum to explain and discuss the booklet's contents so that members are confident to use it in discussions with customers.
