Nampak recognised by Pro Carton

Nampak Cartons' Leeds plant has been recognised by the Pro Carton and European Carton Manufacturers Association (ECMA) annual awards for its carton for Diageo's Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky.

The firm said the carton, which won the Best Beverage Carton 2008 award, was "very challenging" because of its use of deep colour, matt and gloss coatings, reverse printing and embossing.

The judges said the "outstanding print quality" of the carton stood out and the various finishes gave it a special feel, which added "another dimension" to its customer appeal.

As well as producing the carton, Nampak Leeds also did the structural design and development.

The new design removed the need for a separate internal fitment, which was instead built from elements added to the carton blank. This approach meant a lighter cartonboard could be used, but more complex folding and gluing was involved, which put to use the firm's Bobst packer and turning station and six-gun Baumer HHS gluing system installed last year.

As well as Nampak Cartons, the other UK firm to pick up an award was Boxes Prestige in the All Other Food Category for a carton for M&S Speciality Teas.
