The contract comes on the back of AWS’ £14m investment programme that will take its total annual output to 100,000 tonnes by the end of this year.
The Lincolnshire plant has also installed a closed-loop system that reprocesses 15 cubic metres of water an hour.
Chief executive Jonathan Short said the contract was the “culmination of months of negotiation” with APPE, a subsidiary of Spanish PET packaging company La Seda de Barcelona, and the firms are currently discussing increasing the tonnage.
Short told Packaging News that investment to restrict the amount of packaging waste being shipped to the Far East would benefit the take up of recycled material.
He said there was “fantastic momentum in recycling” but a lot of bottles were still going to landfill and more UK-based reprocessing would be “an added incentive”.
“The Far East cannot compete on price for food grade products,” he added.
