UK beer sales have experienced the biggest first quarter drop in sales since 1997, according to the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA).

First quarter UK beer sales dropped by 8.2% in 2009 compared to the same quarter in 2009, revealed the BBPA’s UK Quarterly Beer Barometer.

Off-trade sales from supermarkets and off licenses fell 11% compared to the first quarter in 2008, the first time since 2005.

Pubs faired equally badly with the number of pint sales reducing by 1.7 million in quarter one year-on-year.

Falling sales have also impacted on the government’s tax income reducing it by £17m on last year’s first quarter figures, despite an 18% tax increase during this period.

BBPA chief executive David Long said: “With the budget last week, Government tax policy continues to make this situation worse, despite widespread public and political support for the BBPA/CAMRA Axe the Beer Tax – Save the pub campaign.”
