Mayor Boris Johnson has called on the capital to recycle its rubbish this Christmas and to start thinking of rubbish as “a resource” in line with new proposals from the London Waste and Recycling Board (LWaRB).

The LWaRB has identified three main areas to focus on in the capital: improving recycling efforts, cutting carbon emissions and saving Londoners money.

The board is currently investigating ways to create cleaner energy from our food and garden waste to help reduce the capital’s £12bn annual energy bill.

Half of the country’s restaurants are in London and it has been estimated that the Londoner’s waste could generate two thirds of the city’s domestic energy needs.

In addition the recycling of priority material, such as plastic will be increased.

Johnson said that the LWaRB’s meeting was “very timely” in advance of Christmas when we all produce excess waste.

“By choosing these priorities we can stimulate the creation of green collar jobs, cut the emissions which are causing climate change and dramatically boost our recycling efforts,” he added.

Councillor Daniel Moylan, chairman of London Councils’ Transport and Environment Committee, said that the capital’s 33 boroughs will be working to facilitate recycling in the capital.

“If they haven’t done so, I urge all Londoners to check with their local council to see what services are being offered for their home and to check the location of their nearest recycling centre,” he said.
