BPF to continue debate with BERR

The government has agreed with the British Plastics Federation (BPF) that current economic conditions are “particularly challenging” and that the BPF is an effective channel of communication.

In a letter to the BPF Malcolm Wicks MP, duty minister at the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), said he fully appreciated that industry was struggling on a number of different fronts.

“It is therefore very important that we listen carefully to what business has to say,” he said.

“I would like to reiterate the value we attach to the strong relationship which exists between BERR and the BPF and am pleased this is proving to be an effective channel of dialogue between government and industry.”

In July BPF director-general Peter Davis wrote to business and enterprise secretary John Hutton about a number of issues affecting the competitiveness of British plastics companies.

Davis said: “It’s important we tell ministers what’s happening in industry and suggest remedies for problems.

“The BPF asked for and got: a delay in fuel duty increases, a stamp duty holiday for first-time buyers. We hope our other proposals will be implemented.”
