Catalent installs KBA carton printing press

Catalent Pharma Solutions has bought a KBA printing press for its Dublin facility to boost the European expansion of its printed components business

The 10-colour KBA Rapida 106 will be installed in June and will produce pharmaceutical, healthcare and medical device cartons as well as high end IT retail packaging.

The press can print 15,000 sheets an hour and is fitted with the QualiTronic scanning system, developed for KBA’s currency presses, that identifies inconsistencies and deviations in the printing.

Victor Dixon, Catalent vice president and general manager of printed components, said the new press would enable the firm to “meet the changing needs of our customer base”.

“It introduces a higher standard in pharmaceutical carton supply,” he said.

The KBA Rapida 106 also has a simultaneous plate changing system and a 2-over-8 configuration to allow concurrent production and reduce downtime.

The investment in the Dublin plant, which opened in 1989, follows similar technology upgrades in the US and Puerto Rico.
