Chlorine packaging deal referred by OFT

Chemical firm Ineos Chlor has had the proposed sale of its chlorine packaging and distribution company to BOC referred to the Competition Commission.

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has serious concerns about reduced competition in the supply of chlorine to the water industry.

Simon Prichard, OFT senior director of mergers, said: “The merger is likely to raise chlorine prices to water companies because it removes rivalry between BOC and Ineos – the most important competitive dynamic in the market in recent years.”

If the acquisition is approved, 12 Ineos employees will transfer to BOC, which is part of the Linde Group.
