Clifford aims revamped bottle carry case at supermarkets

Clifford Packaging is targeting its newly christened BB2 collapsible carry case at UK supermarkets despite their slow uptake of its predecessor, the Bottle Buddie.

Milton Keynes-based Clifford has developed the pack, which looks like a standard 0201 corrugated case and can be used to carry a range of products such as cereals, crisps and wine.

Retailers in the UK were slow to adopt the Bottle Buddie, which was manufactured in two passes and therefore incurred higher unit costs.

However, the BB2 can be manufactured in one pass at a lower unit cost and on a standard case maker. It will also fit on existing packing lines with either hand or automated case erecting.

The case acts as a transit pack for the product. When it reaches the store the lid is ripped off and the remaining pack collapsed and offered to customers as a means to take products home.

Consequently, the retailer only has to recycle approximately 20% of the case.

“This could potentially get a lot of corrugated out of the supply chain,” innovations development manager Rowan Tinn told Packaging News.

“It gives consumers a choice so that if they want to use a box, they can.”

Clifford Packaging showed the BB2 at the Easyfairs packaging show for the first time in February.
