Crown Holdings, the metal packaging specialist, has notched up rises in profits and turnover across its European packaging divisions.

The US-based firm said diversity of products, firm volumes and emerging markets helped to boost its third-quarter results.

Profits for its European drinks business nearly doubled to £29m ($60m) in the three months to 30 September against the same period last year.

Speciality packaging profits rose almost £1m to nearly £4m, while European food profits remained unchanged at £27m.

Turnover across the three European divisions went up, with food making the most, £284m, up almost £1.5m on last year.

Chairman and chief executive John Conway said: "Improved third-quarter results show the strength of our diverse range of products, customers and worldwide markets.

"Global volumes were firm, reflecting the growing contribution of emerging markets to our portfolio."

Total group profits for the third quarter rose nearly 20 per cent to £153m, while turnover edged up 7.6 per cent to £1.1bn.
