Crown Holdings, the metal packaging specialist, has broken ground on its new beverage can facility in Slovakia.

The new 120,000sqm plant is being built in the town of Kechnec in order to be close to customers in central and eastern Europe.

Construction is expected to be completed by early 2010 and the plant will employ more than 100 people.

The Kechnec plant will initially have a capacity of 750m cans a year, although it will be possible to install additional lines if required.

Ralph Lambert, vice president for eastern Europe at Crown Bevcan Europe, said: “Our new facility will expand out capability to support major international brewers and soft drink companies on both a local and global level.”

Kechnec is in eastern Slovakia near the Hungarian border. Crown already has five plants in the region for its food and closures business.
