Crown to increase tinplate food can prices

Crown Europe, a division of global packaging company Crown Holdings, has announced that it will increase its prices by 32% for tinplate food cans from 1 January, 2009.

Aerosols, metal vacuum closures and speciality packaging will also be hit by similar increases, depending on the metal content in the pack.

Crown has blamed rising input costs, including energy, fuel, coatings and lacquers for price increases.

Unprecedented tinplate pricing for 2009, due to tinmill closures and supply shortages, has also had a profound affect.

Crown Europe president Chris Homfray said the company had worked hard to minimise the impact on customers, with whom they have been in constant dialogue.

“Going into 2009, in order to secure supply in a tight market, we are having to contract with suppliers at substantial increases, which we have no other option, but to pass on through the supply chain,” he said.

Despite this a strong performance in its beverage and food can business increased Crown Holdings’s profit by 21% to $312, (£180.6m) in the third quarter ended 30 September.

The company’s net sales increased to $2.4bn in the quarter, compared with $2.2bn in 2007.
