Danjim calls for more recycling facilities at work

Government and organisations such as the Waste and Resources Action Programme ought to do more to encourage recycling in the workplace, according to sustainable packaging manufacturer Danjim Marketing.

An online survey conducted in September found that 49% of the 5,825 participants had no recycling facilities at work. Where recycling was available only 15% said it was possible to recycle plastics.

“The focus has been on recycling at home, but there’s so much material in the workplace. People buying their lunch generate a lot of packaging waste alongside food waste,” said Danjim managing director Shazeem Kazmi.

Participants also felt that councils could be doing more to encourage recycling. Some 60% said that although local authorities did send out messages they would “like them to do more”.

Kazmi recognised that more work should be done to make recycling more uniform, but admitted it would be difficult as local authorities “all have their own budgets and agendas”.

Birmingham-based Danjim Marketing makes sustainable packaging products, such as plastic carrier bags using 50% recycled material.

The survey was publicised through a number of trade magazines, universities, networking site Facebook and the company’s own contacts, Kazmi said.
