Drinks giant Diageo has confirmed plans to temporarily close its Kilmarnock packaging facility in a bid to cut costs.

The site will close for one week in March and one week in April.

The employees have the option to take paid leave, unpaid leave or banked hours for the week in March. For the week in April staff will be required to take annual leave, it said.

“The willingness of our employees to adopt to a flexible approach to working in the current economic climate is greatly appreciated and we will continue to work closely with employee representatives and communicate regularly with our employees during these difficult times.”

The Kilmarnock site is one of three packaging plants operated in Scotland by the drinks firm. The others are in Leven, Fife and Shieldhall near Glasgow.
