European papermakers place focus on water footprint

Water usage has been placed top of the European paper industry’s agenda after the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) joined the European Water Partnership (EWP).

EWP works to place water consumption on the political agenda and develop awareness of issues faced by the sector among business and policy makers.

Water is a major part of the papermaking process and work has already been done to clean and reduce the amount used by the industry.

“We believe it is important to be part of the process and share our expertise while shaping water policy,” said CEPI Energy and Environment director Marco Mensink.

CEPI has also joined the Water Footprint Network (WFN) to work on developing a water footprint indicator to calculate direct and indirect water use by consumers and producers.

“Water is an extremely valuable resource and we in the paper industry take our responsibility to its management seriously,” said CEPI managing director Teresa Presas.

CEPI has 18 member countries, which represent a total of 800 pulp, paper and board producing companies across Europe.
