Over two thirds of steel packaging is recycled in Europe, according to the latest figures from the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging (APEAL).

The study claims that 69% of steel packaging was recycled in Europe in 2007, which equates to 2.5m tonnes of food and drinks cans and other steel containers.

Apeal revealed that the recycling rate for steel grew throughout Europe by 3% on the 2006 figure, thanks to strong performances in Belgium and Germany where 90% of steel packaging was recycled.

Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands were also high on the list of recyclers having recycled over 80% of their steel containers.

“These figures show just how much of an impact we can have in reducing our emissions through recycling and better use of resources,” said Frieda Brepoels of the environmental committee of the European Parliament.

“This is an excellent example of how our everyday behaviour can collectively make a big difference in our fight against climate change.”

Apeal represents 92% of the total steel production for packaging in Europe. Members include: ArcelorMittal Packaging, Corus Packaging Plus, Rasselstein and US Steel Kosice.
