The site, which will operate a new service called Flexible Express, will focus on the production of pouches, printed film and bags.
The plant marks a change in direction for Foster Packaging, its business is based on long-run rotogravure printing.
Managing director Joe Foster said: “We want to create the need for short-run packaging. During a downturn companies look for new ways to market themselves and digitally printed short-run packaging is a great way to do that.”
Foster’s Paul Young told Packaging News that the company is already getting interest in the service from its existing customers.
The investment included an HP Indigo press ws4500, which can handle a range of substrates ranging from 12 to 350 microns.
The company has facilities in South Africa, Kenya, the US, The Dominican Republic, as well as in the UK and Ireland.
