Glass and plastic packaging manufacturer Gerresheimer is looking to boost its presence in Asia with a new pharmaceutical glass packaging plant in eastern China.

The German firm acquired the Shuangfeng business in 2006 and the new 16,000sqm plant in Danyang increases the subsidiary’s size to 150 production lines in three facilities serving the domestic and export markets.

Gerresheimer chief executive Axel Herberg said the investment was an important strategic step for further business expansion in Asia.

The Danyang facility produces pharmaceutical vials and cartridges for injection systems. It has clean rooms and in-line camera systems to monitor the lines’ output to help meet growing Asian demand for quality packaging and drug delivery.

“We work at the highest level of internationally recognised quality standards,” Gerresheimer board member Max Raster told delegates at last Friday’s (29 May) opening ceremony.

Gerresheimer has a total of seven plastics and glass packaging plants in China and employs some 1,500 people in the country.
