Gerresheimer sells consumer healthcare unit

Gerresheimer, the glass and plastic packaging manufacturer, has divested its consumer healthcare unit to focus on its core business in pharmaceuticals and life science.

Plastic processing firm Krallmann bought the consumer healthcare unit, which manufactures products such as toothbrushes, for an undisclosed sum on 1 June.

The unit has an annual turnover of €24m (£19m) and was part of the Wilden Group business that Düsseldorf-based Gerresheimer bought in January 2007.

Gerresheimer chief executive Axel Herberg said the decision to sell had been taken because consumer healthcare “did not fit with our strategy of focussing on pharmaceuticals and life science”. It has already discontinued its aluminium packaging operation.

Gerresheimer produces glass and plastics packaging and other products such as syringes and inhalers from 41 plants around Europe.

The German firm employs more than 10,800 staff and recorded €957m in sales in 2007. In April it announced a €110m investment plan for 2008 to boost capacity.

It has also acquired two plastic packaging businesses – EDP of Spain and Brazilian firm Allplas Embalagens.
