Plastic tray manufacturer HFW Plastics has gone into administration with the immediate loss of 19 jobs.

Administrators Mark Firmin and Howard Smith of KPMG were called into the Gateshead company, which previously employed 83 staff, on Wednesday.

In a statement, KPMG said that the company was still trading in administration and that a buyer was being sought for the thermoforming business, whose biggest market is the food sector.

It said that the company had suffered from falling orders in recent months and the loss of a “significant” contract. It is so far unclear what that contract was.

Smith said: “We are hopeful of generating interest as HFW Plastics has a number of valuable strengths, primarily around speed and flexibility. It is able to undertake quick turnaround and short production run jobs.”

According to its website, HFW Plastics is a BRC-approved supplier of thermoformed trays to the fresh food sector and its products are used by companies selling in all the major supermarkets.
