Film and bag manufacturer British Polythene Industries (BPI) has been awarded a Centenary Certificate from Companies House, 100 years after it first registered as a company.

The group, which has a heritage reaching as far back as the late 18th century was incorporated on 16 March 1910. Since then it has grown through various deals, but most significantly, it said, through the the merger in the 20th century of Scottish firms James Scott & Sons and JF Robertson.

Both had roots stretching back to the 1797 in spinning and weaving sacks but adapted as the industrial age took hold, and embraced new technologies and materials.

Today, Greenock-based BPI operates from sites in the UK, mainland Europe, North America and China and is the world’s biggest polythene film supplier. It is also capable of reprocessing more than 64,000 tonnes of post-use material annually.

John Langlands, BPI’s chief executive, said: “Understandably everyone at BPI is delighted that the company has received this commemorative certificate from Companies House.

“It’s a rare honour and a real testament to our belief in investment, progressive thinking and keeping abreast of the key trends and issues across our diverse markets and customer base.”
