Paperboard manufacturer Iggesund Paperboard is to invest 21.5m in improving water purification at its Iggesunds Bruk mill in Sweden.

Iggesund manufactures its Invercote paperboard product at the Iggesunds Bruk mill, which is used by the packaging industry for prestige products.

Iggesunds Bruk mill director Staffan Jonsson said they have chosen “to work with chemical precipitation in the new facility”.

“The process will result in a substantial reduction to the oxygen-consuming substances in the wastewater plus improvements to basically all other parameters as well,” he added.

At the start of the year the company committed to reducing the carbon dioxide emissions of the mill by 75% over the next few years, which equates to taking 20,000 cars off the road.

The purification system will come online in autumn 2009.
