Ilkeston to close in Amcor restructure

Australian packaging manufacturer Amcor is to close one of its plants in Derbyshire, with the loss of up to 140 jobs, and transfer operations to a site in Surrey.

Ilkeston-based Amcor Flexibles Venus produces packaging for food, but following a review the company concluded that it was better to combine the activities with another site in Evesham, where 60 jobs will be created.

In April, Amcor Flexibles announced a major restructuring of its European operations that would cut its 7,600-strong workforce by some 900 jobs and “significantly reduce” the number of its sites, with the aim of delivering “solid growth and strong returns”.

The company has said, however, that it will give full consideration to relocating the Ilkeston workers to other sites. Amcor has not yet set a closure date and the plant will operate as normal in the meantime.

Meanwhile, rival Visy has been prosecuted for price fixing by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), which had investigated the firm on the basis of information supplied by Amcor three years ago.

Amcor was subsequently granted immunity from prosecution and cooperated with the ACCC. The employees involved have since left the company. The ACCC recommended that Visy be fined £15.6m (AU$36m) for its actions.

Amcor managing director and chief executive Ken MacKenzie also apologised last month for anti-Semitic comments made by two of the executives involved in the price-fixing affair, which came to light in recordings presented to the investigation.
