Metal packaging giant Impress is continuing to expand in the European seafood market after buying Spanish firm Megasa for an undisclosed amount

Impress first revealed its interest in Megasa in January to expand its presence in the Iberian seafood market.

Megasa is the third largest seafood can manufacturer in Spain and Portugal with sales of EUR 40m a year. The purchase was completed on Monday (8 June).

The firm is located in Vilagarcía in Galicia, northwestern Spain, and produces steel cans for tuna, sardines and shellfish.

Impress’s nearby plant in Pontevedra produces aluminium cans for seafood. Galicia is home to Europe’s largest seafood processing industry.

Chief executive Francis Labbé said in January the acquisition broadened the firm’s coverage of the industry in Europe. “It reinforces our position as the world’s largest producer of seafood cans.”

Impress is based in Deventer, the Netherlands and has worldwide sales of approximately EUR 1.7bn.

It employs approximately 8,000 people in 56 facilities in 21 countries in Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Seychelles and Morocco.
