Independent Can Company has survived the Great Depression and World War Two to celebrate its 80th anniversary this year.

The US manufacturer of standard and promotional metal packaging was formed in 1928 by Gus Parker and Harry Evitt in Baltimore, Maryland.

The first can manufactured by the company was produced for a local meat packaging plant and was designed to hold 50 pounds of lard.

In 1949, Harry Huether purchased the Independent Can Company, which has remained family owned and managed ever since.

The fourth generation of Huethers has since joined the business.

“In an industry characterised by consolidation and shrinking numbers, our commitment to reinvestment and a mission to ‘be the best not the biggest’ has resulted in consistent growth and corporate success,” said company president Rick Huether.

The Belcamp, Maryland-headquartered company has manufacturing operations in Belcamp and Fort Madison, Iowa and Conneaut, Ohio.

Independent Can Company serves customers in the US, Canada, Mexico and other major trade centres around the world.
