Industry support for energy from waste grows

Calls are mounting for greater support for energy from waste (EfW) plants after a report by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) accused the government of being “obsessed” with recycling.

The British Plastics Federation (BPF) has thrown its weight behind the report – Energy from Waste – A Wasted Opportunity – which argued in favour EfW.

BPF director general Peter Davis called on the government to tackling the problem of public perception of EfW. “The BPF has for a long time been campaigning for EfW,” he said.

“These are very clean plants. The EU directives administering EfW are very strict.”

The IMechE’s report claimed that the UK would not achieve carbon reduction and landfill targets solely through recycling and expressed particular concern that recyclable material was shipped overseas.

It argued that the government should stop describing plants as waste treatment facilities and label them more accurately as power stations.

London Mayor Boris Johnson also joined the debate on EfW last month when he called on the capital to start thinking of waste “as a resource” in line with new proposals from the London Waste and Recycling Board (LWaRB).

The board, which Johnson chairs, is currently investigating ways to create cleaner energy from our food and garden waste to help reduce the capital’s £12bn annual energy bill.
