Dublin-based Mediaware is printing cartons on demand for Microsoft’s Windows 7 software using a Xerox Gallop, its digital packaging collaboration with Stora Enso.

Mediaware’s director of business and strategy Ronan Phipps spoke of the company’s success of moving into digital printing for the packaging market at Ipex’s media summit, held at ExCel in London’s Docklands this week.

Phipps told delegates that the company was exploring other opportunities including using the Gallop for the pharmaceutical and IT markets.

“Given the worldwide distribution in multiple languages required for this project, we needed a solution that could produce different-sized batches of the packaging with specialised information for different regions,” he said.

Microsoft wanted to adopt a lean manufacturing approach for Windows 7 so as to avoid holding stock and scrappage costs, and to reduce transport costs.

Consequently, Mediaware had to be agile enough to respond to short lead times, sometimes only 24 hours in advance.

“We also see the same kind of trends with other IT customers and pharmaceutical customers,” said Phipps.

Xerox launched the Gallop two years ago at Interpack in Germany.

The integrated system comprises a Xerox iGen4 digital printing press with a specially designed KAMA die-cutter and an off-line gluing unit.
