Computer 2000 Distribution has paid 2,886 in costs after admitting to a breach of the Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations.

The Lutterworth, Leicestershire-based firm accepted a caution over excess transit packaging for electronic and computer equipment and is now considering alternative designs and investing in new packaging technology.

Leicestershire County Council trading standards officers were satisfied with the firm’s efforts to change their packaging and decided not to pursue court proceedings.

Unit head Keith Regan told Packaging News: “The company has done quite a lot of work and I took the decision to go down the caution route.”

Regan added that apart from the legal element keeping packaging to a minimum made good business sense at a time firms were looking to reduce costs.

Computer 2000 Distribution was unavailable for comment.

The news comes three weeks after video game accessory supplier Powerplay Group was prosecuted under the requirements.
