Four arrests have been made in connection with the fire that destroyed a Wealmoor Atherstone fresh produce packing factory and killed four firefighters 18 months ago.

Three men and one woman were arrested this morning (7 May) at addresses in the Handsworth and Smethwick areas of Birmingham and in Evesham, Warwickshire.

They have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life in connection with the November 2007 fire that engulfed the Atherstone on Stour-based fruit and vegetable processing and packing factory.

Four firefighters died in the blaze, which broke out on a Friday night and was immediately treated as suspicious.  A joint investigation into the incident by the Health and Safety Executive and Warwickshire Police is ongoing.

A statement from Warwickshire Police today said: “Early this morning three men, two aged 25 and one aged 27, were arrested at addresses in the Handsworth and Smethwick areas of Birmingham and a 26-year-old woman was arrested in the Evesham area.

“They have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and are in custody at a Warwickshire police station where they will be questioned by detectives.”

Wealmoor, whose headquarters are in Hayes, Middlesex, was not available for comment at the time of publication.
