Linpac Packaging is in early-stage talks over building a food packaging plant in Belarus as it looks to expand its capacity in the central and eastern European market.

The global food packaging company, based in Knottingley, west Yorkshire, has started discussions with authorities in the former Soviet country to build a plant there.

Linpac Packaging, the plastic packaging arm of Birmingham-based Linpac Group, already runs a manufacturing site in Poland to serve the region.

News of the plans come three months after Ralf Wunderlich, Linpac Packaging president and managing director, told Packaging News that he saw Russia was one of the “prizes” in his plans for international expansion, alongside Brazil and Mexico.

Commenting on the discussions over the Belarus project, Wunderlich said that the country was “well located for serving emerging markets in central and eastern Europe”.

“Depending on the outcome of these discussions, and further market research, we will make a decision about whether to proceed with this facility.”

He added that Linpac was always on the look-out for new growth opportunities and was especially keen to be “at the forefront” in emerging markets for food packaging.

The company already has 25 plants in 19 different countries, employing more than 4,000 staff.

News of the discussions comes in the same week that parent company Linpac Group confirmed it was in the process of refinancing its debt.  It expects to complete the refinancing by the end of the summer.
