M-real has increased its folding boxboard prices by EUR 70 (64.21) per tonne for customers based in mainland Europe, after recently boosting the price for UK customers by 80 per tonne.

The company said that the increase, which takes effect on 1 December for all ex-mill and ex-stock deliveries, was in response to the “severe cost inflation experienced in previous years” and “to compensate for riding pulp prices”.

It follows closely on the heels of moves by other materials suppliers to increase prices.

In June, Iggesund Paperboard increased its prices by 20% in an attempt to counteract the effects of a weak pound; while Sonoco-Alcore increased its recycled paperboard prices by £40 per tonne in Europe from September.

Mika Joukio, M-real’s head of consumer packaging, said: “We have brought in additional customer benefits from new product innovations like the Lite4u concept.

“Through this price increase, we are securing our ability to support our customers’ success in the future.”

The price hike will be effective until further notice, the company said.

M-real’s UK price increase took effect from 1 October. The company said it was introduced because of “unsatisfactory profitability”, and added that as profitability in the UK was much lower than in mainland Europe, the price increase was brought two months earlier.
