A man died last night after getting trapped in a paper-making machine at Arjowiggins’ Ivybridge site in Devon.

The man, who is yet to be named, is reported to have died in hospital after being rescued by four fire crews from the drying cylinders of the paper-making machine.

“I think there’s got to be some sort of European legislation that obliges manufacturers of equipment to cooperate far quicker with HSEs when their equipment is involved in a fatality,” said Unite national officer Peter Ellis.

“This is the second fatality in 18 months on a paper mill,” said Ellis, refering to the death of a man at a Kimberly-Clark paper mill in Barrow-in-Furness in November 2007. “There’s still no resolution to that [incident].”

Unite officials are today on site at the Ivybridge mill and have been in contact with the Health and Safety Executive , the Employers’ Federation and the Confederation of Paper Industries.

The Union expects to issue a further statement with the HSE and the company when more details of the incident are known.

Unite will visit the man’s family and offer legal advice.
