Menace or Myth: Bioplastics and crops

Fears about a world food shortage have raised concerns that bioplastics will take away crops from food supplies, but is this an over-reaction?

Bioplastics was such a hot topic at Interpack that half a hall was dedicated to the subject. Speaking at the show, European Bioplastics chairman Harald Kaeb said that the question of crops grown for industry needed “intelligent research”.

Kaeb said: “Perhaps we can look to turn crops into bioplastic products and then into fuels, rather than directly turning crops into fuel.”

Natureworks’ business development manager for the UK, Eamonn Tighe, who was also at the show, said his firm’s US plant would require less than 1% of available US corn crops at full capacity.
