Mondi closes Hypac corrugated operation

March 23, 2009 Comments Off

Mondi has confirmed the closure of its corrugated box plant Hypac in Scunthorpe after three weeks of staff consultations

Hypac will wind down operations at the site, which employs 160 employees, in the coming weeks and transfer production to other UK sites, such as Mold in North Wales and March in Cambridgeshire.

The closure has been blamed on the falling demand for corrugated in the UK and the continued weak financial performance of the Hypac site.

The company entered into consultation over the closure at the end of February and announced the results to the workforce on Thursday 19 March.

UK box plants managing director Steve Moss told Packaging News that Hypac was entering into an “orderly and phased” wind down process with its employees.

“We will seek a buyer for the building once final production finishes,” he said.

Hypac manufactures approximately 90m sqm of corrugated case material per year, which is used to produce a range of packs from die-cut products through to retail-ready packaging.

The company is part of the Mondi International paper and packaging group that has operations across 35 countries and approximately 35,000 employees.

Hypac had a turnover of £25m in 2008.
