Supermarket chain Morrisons has become the latest retailer to report record Christmas sales with 6.5% year-on-year growth over the festive period.

In a trading statement this morning the company reported an overall sales uplift of 11.5% in the six weeks to 3 January including the addition of new stores opened in the last year.

Like-for-like sales were up 6.5%, a figure which outperforms Sainsbury’s 4.2% growth in Christmas sales and Tesco’s 4.9%.

Morrisons chairman Sir Ian Gibson said: “Although we remain cautious on the economic environment and consumer spending, we look forward to further progress in the coming year.”

The group is still looking for a replacement for chief executive Mark Bolland, who is moving to head up Mars & Spencer but is currently on gardening leave. Negotiations are underway over his exact leaving date.
