Morrisons outperforms rivals over Christmas period

Morrisons had the best Christmas period of the leading supermarkets, its pre-close statement revealed this morning.

In the six weeks to January, total sales excluding fuel were up by 9%, of which 1% was a contribution from new space.

The company’s like-for-like sales excluding fuel increased by 8%.

Sainsbury’s sales over the Christmas period, excluding fuel were up 5%, while Tesco’s sales increased by 3%.

Chief executive Marc Boland said: “We remain cautious on the outlook for consumer spending and we expect the market to remain challenging. In this environment we believe Morrisons value credentials will serve us well.”

The company is awaiting approvals to complete the acquisition of 38 stores from the Co-operative group.

Morrisons has 382 stores in the UK.
