Morrisons has reported growth in sales and customer footfall in the same week that it was announced that chief executive Marc Bolland would leave the company.

The retailer reported a 9.1% increase in sales for the period, excluding VAT and fuel, in an interim management statement issued today (19 November).

Chief executive Marc Bolland said: “Morrisons continues to grow ahead of the market driven by our award-winning combination of outstanding quality, fresh food and great value.”

The news follows an article published in The Times that said Morrisons’ finance director Richard Pennycook would consider the top job at the supermarket.

“Obviously the news of his [Bolland's] departure is only very recent. I haven’t had a chance to think about it yet, but I will,” said Pennycook of Bolland’s departure.

Yesterday it was revealed that Bolland would be joining Marks & Spencer as outgoing chief executive Stuart Rose’s replacement.

Rose will remain as part-time chairman at M&S.
