Over 270 jobs are at stake at two of MeadWestvaco’s folding-carton plants in the US as the company focuses on the higher-return personal care and healthcare segments.

The company has announced that it will close its Louisa site in Virginia and another at Caguas in Puerto Rico, which convert visual and paperboard packaging for the healthcare and personal care markets.

MWV’s work in paperboard converting for personal care will be moved from the Louisa site to the company’s Melrose Park site in Illinois.

Similarly, the paperboard converting for healthcare will move to MWV’s Mebane facility in North Carolina.

MWV president Jim Buzzard said in a statement that the company remains “fully committed” to the healthcare and personal care markets and will continue to invest in areas that offer the business “a competitive advantage”.

“The alignment of our resources into more profitable markets will enable us to improve performance and better support the development of differentiated solutions,” he added.

Approximately 278 jobs will be affected by the closures.

MWV operates in 30 countries and serves customers in the healthcare, personal care, beauty care, food, beverage, media and entertainment, home and garden industries.
