Last year’s fire that destroyed the MY Healthcare plant in Thorpe, Surrey cost Nampak 3.5m, it has emerged.

At its annual meeting on Wednesday (4 February), the South African firm was questioned on a trading statement that was published soon after industrial group Bidvest made an offer to buy a 30% share in the company in September.

According to the Business Post, the statement revealed the company had suffered losses of around R680m (£46.7m, at today’s prices) due to the fire and closure of smaller subsidiaries. The firm recorded a loss from the fire of R50.8m (£3.5m).

Nampak chairman Trevor Evans denied that the content of the ”doom and gloom” statement was related to the Bidvest offer, although admitted the timing might have been different had the offer not been made.

At the meeting, Nampak said it was making progress in selling underperforming assets, despite the current state of the global economy.

In September, the firm announced a three-year plan to boost earnings by selling non-core and underperforming businesses.

At its height, the Thorpe blaze was attended by 130 firefighters from Surrey, London and Berkshire. In total 230 firefighters attended the scene. No-one was injured and the fire was not thought to be suspicious
