Alcan workers call off strike

Strike action at Alcan Packaging in Salterbeck, Cumbria, has been called off following intervention by Amicus.

Discussions between confectionery packaging manufacturer Alcan and the union have resulted in an alternative solution to the proposed job losses within Alcan’s gravure department.

Amicus had argued that job losses would have made it difficult for the firm to meet current production levels, and said the initial proposal of job cuts was a quick fix that would not have worked in the long term.

Amicus regional officer Edward Irvine said: “Amicus and Alcan have agreed on an amicable solution which is satisfactory for both our members and the company.”

Irvine said that manning levels within the company would remain the same and current production levels would be maintained.

“As a consequence of the agreement we’ve reached, only one or two people have left the company and that’s through them taking voluntary redundancy,” he added.
